Sixty people set out from Caldbeck on a glorious Easter Saturday morning for the sponsored walk to Mungrisdale, covering 26 km and over 1,200m of ascent.
Starting off from Ben’s great uncle’s house, the walk went through Nether Row and joined the Cumbria Way over High Pike. On the descent into Mosedale from the Shooting Box, the cattle truck and gazebo which marked the site for lunch were a welcome sight. While some enjoyed the soup and rolls and relaxed in the sunshine, others cooled off with a swim in the (very) refreshing waters of the Caldew.
After a good lunch, the ascent of Bowscale Fell was the hardest part of the walk, and there was only just enough breeze to fly a kite at the top. The views on the route across to Bannerdale Crags were spectacular, and some also included an optional detour up Blencathra before descending Mouthswaite Combe. Arrival at Blake Hills was greeting with tea, cakes and an opportunity to count blisters.
The day ended with supper at Mungrisdale’s wonderful new village hall and an opportunity to look at a compilation of everyone’s pictures of the walk.
